So that seems to be the question here lately, is it time to ditch CodeIgniter. A post by Kenny Meyers pointing out several issues with EE, CodeIgniter, and EllisLab in general has prompted a lot of people to leave the community, not that Kenny coerced them to, he just put a voice to the frustration that a lot of us have been feeling.
It seems that the things that attract people to CodeIgniter also end up being the things that drive them away, such as
- stable core
- lightweight
- community
The stable core is great, you don’t have to worry about your code breaking every other week due to some huge change in the core. That stability is also a huge drag when nothing changes for over a year.
I love how lightweight the core is but that is also a problem for a lot of developers because you have to add a dozen changes just to get a usable framework.
The CodeIgniter community is probably one of the best communities for users starting out with frameworks or PHP in general but due to this fact it can be a frustrating place for a more advanced developer because for every hard question or awesome concept there are a hundred “i can haz youtube” type questions.
So, is it time to ditch CodeIgniter? The answer, at least for myself at this point, is no. CodeIgniter is still a great framework to develop in, I am committed to continuing to enhance the community and bring more quality code and features to the framework. I would recommend CodeIgniter to anyone.
That doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t try other frameworks or even languages for that matter. I always encourage people to learn more and push themselves. If I didn’t know VB and Python I wouldn’t be as good of a PHP developer.
So my recommendation to those of you that are ready to throw cold water on your ignited code is to expand yourself, learn rails, learn Kohana, Django, whatever, and then apply what you learn with CodeIgniter if after that CI is still the best choice for your project, which a lot of times I think you’ll find that it is.
